Building a decking area over a step

Hello there. I was hoping to do this during lockdown. The decked area I want would cover the step and allow us to step directly out from the screen door on to the decking.
any online guides I’ve seen on decking covers building it over soil.
can this be done or would the step and stones need to be removed first?

There is no reason to remove the existing step. In fact you will probably have a very sturdy deck if you use it as a base for your new deck.

Why do you need this decking?

Have you someone with a disability in your household who would require this?

As they say, "each to their own."

What I can see looks ideal for most people.

With any sort of additional decking, you're opting for "perpetual maintenance."

Going along with what @Doghouse Riley said, I would first pressure clean the step and deck. I’ll bet you will be surprised at how good it looks.

If you haven't a jet wash, use "Wet and Forget." I really use my Karcher now, this stuff does the business.
