i have recently moved house and we have some lovely old sash windows, however several of the windows seem to have the ropes missing and other ropes seem to be perishing, I have carried out several projects on previous properties myself and feel confident enough to carry out this project and was wondering if anybody on this site has undertaken something like this and could give me advice before I start, is this a relatively easy project or do you think I should get a professional in?

Harry, Yes this is quite a simple job for the home handyman and only requirs basic hand tools. Over 20 years ago I uploaded (probably the first on the internet) an easy to follow guide on how to do this work and it’s still online now - https://sashwindowspecialist.com/diy-cord-replacement/. I had plenty of feedback from many people who followed this guide successfully. Of course nowadays there are also many videos on YouTube if you find that an easier Option. I prefer to use a top quality polyester cord (try yacht/boat suppliers) over traditional waxed cotton cords but I’m sure the purist out there will disagree. Good luck
