Hi all,

I've just started to remove some vinyl floor tiles from the kitchen of an old bungalow and have discovered that they cover what looks like red terracotta tiles (see attachment). I'm presuming the black stuff is glue from the vinyl tile but it doesn't come away when I scrape it. Has anyone got any suggestions for cleaning this off, and maybe cleaning the terracotta tiles themselves?

Many thanks.

Before doing that - uncover all of them. If some are missing/damaged/cracked you might decide you want to cover it all up again with new vinyl, or wood, anyway.

Thanks for the reply. I've uncovered them and all but one is damaged. This I can replace from a reclamatin yard.

I've discovered (by accident) that a bottle of tar remover that came with my car does the trick. It softened the 'tar' backing from the vinyl tiles which was then easily removed.
