Water softener drainage

i have my softener drain into the septic after regeneration. I want to reroute this to put less strain on an older system and was thinking of having it drain back into the dug well?? Any thoughts on this? I also have water shortages on dry summers so was thinking of not wasting the water and putting it back to the well.
