Good morning.
I am just about to start a bathroom project and am planning on tiling the bathroom floor which is on the first floor and therefore has floor boards. I have been doing some research and I am unsure which of the following is the best option to prepare the floor before tiling:
Option 1. Lay 12mm plywood and then an anti cracking membrane, or,
Option 2. Lay 12mm cement backer board and then tile straight on top.
Also with option 2, does the use of backer board mean you don’t have to use any membrane?
And finally, what tile adhesive and grout is best to use on this type of floor?
Thanks in advance

Hi,

Welcome to the forum Jamie.

I've never tiled over a wooden floor and never will. Our neighbours have tiled over wooden floors only for tiles to crack or loosen then had lots of trouble lifting the tiles and making good.

Our bathroom and kitchen both have vinyl cushion floor which is cheap and easily replaceable.

Of course it's your choice and hopefully other forum members can give the advice you seek; good luck.

Kind regards, Colin.
