Paint for original ceiling rose

i have stripped paint off an original Victorian ceiling rose and a load of gunk - the detail revealed is now great. But how to paint to protect the feature? I've seen recommendations for distemper, limewash, primer and am confused. What paint and what brush/roller? Photos of before and after attached
