Hi,
I'm having a wood burner fitted, and the builder opened up the fireplace today, removing the old gas fire.

At about 1m from the ground he found a wire, going up, chased into the breast. It was tapped up. On testing it it was live, and is on the lighting circuit. There doesn't seem to be switch.

Any ideas why?

Sounds like it might have installed for an electric mantel clock. These were the go to for good timekeeping maybe 50years ago.

If the wiring is in good shape, might want to find a convenient spot and install an outlet using the wire? Taped up is not exactly the way to terminate a live wire.

Thanks for that, it explains why there is no switch.

Have you found its reason?
