hot tap wont turn off

I have a mixer tap with shower in the bathroom, The hot tap got stuck in the on position today. I managed to (almost) close it using a hammer but will need to get it fixed. Could someone tell me what is likely to be the problem - so that I don't get charged too much by a plumber, and also what I should do if I decide to fix it myself.
Help much appreciated.
