decorating a ceiling thats had a water leak

Morning
had a small leak from the upstairs bathroom,which has now been fixed,but its left the hallway ceiling(plaster) a jumble of brownish water marks tried painting over with no luck,do i need to seal the ceiling with something before i repaint the ceiling?

Hi,
You should use a solvent based undercoat ,unlike gloss the emulsion will stick to it much better.It is also possible to find a spray can of paint dedicated to water stains removal.Hope it helps.

Hi its easiest to use a stainblock paint. You can buy it in a spray can and its avalible at all the major harware chains. You just spray it on and it dries in 10 mins then you can paint it with normal ceiling paint
