Deck Footings

Hi there!

I am looking to build a deck on the back of my home. I plan on attaching the deck to the house. I have not been able to find any information about how far from the house I will have to set my footings. The deck will be about 16” from the ground. Also, how far apart to I have to place the footings? I am located in Northern Illinois.

Not a pro here (just signed up to ask my own question), but what I understand is that you want to look up joist span. This is calculated from your joist size and spacing (using 2x10 at 16" on center?). You'll use this to figure out how far away your beams are allowed to be, and from there it's obvious where the posts/footings have to go.
