Boarding collar ties in loft

Hi, my collar ties in the loft are quite low so wondering if it’s possible to board on top of them as theres decent height above, Nothing stored will be heavy. I’ve attached a pic.

There’s also a couple of thin strips of wood running down the middle fixed on top of the collar ties that doesn’t appear to add any structural integrity. I thought perhaps they were to space out the roof sections when the property was built (2005). If I was boarding I’d want to remove these if it’s possible so the boards can run the whole way across.
