Restoring and revarnishing wooden tabletop

A friend has a wooden table, the top comb-joined. Per the pic below, there is an area that has suffered some abrasion: the varnish has been worn through and there's some mold visible in the cracks.

Question: would it be possible to do a bit of repair of just the affected area, less than a square foot, 'feathering' around the area? I don't think it is stained, the color we see is natural. I envisage carefully sanding over the affected area, needling out the dark mold spots, maybe applying wood filler of similar color to the small 'holes' we see, then gently varnishing over with a clear varnish.

My concern, though, is 'matching': might my restoration result in a patch that doesn't match the rest of the tabletop, so would actually be more conspicuous than the area is at the moment? I'd prefer not to have to sand and re-coat the whole tabletop, obviously a much bigger job, but what do we think?

Thanks,
