Damaged Fireplace Box?

I live in a home built in 1929. The original wood fireplace in the basement was converted to gas. I am concerned about the soundness of the structure. The fireplace is in the basement against a wall that divides two rooms. It is vented through a flue. After lighting a fire, the the wall on the other side of the fireplace (in the other room on the wall behind the fireplace) is very hot to touch. This wall is brick. Should I be concerned that the firebox is compromised?
