Craftsman Weedwacker Sticky Pull Cord

I have a Craftsman 358.7966160 4 cycle 40 cc weedwacker and the pull cord doesn't retract when fully pulled out. I can turn the spool a bit with a screwdriver, and then it retracts. I'd like to examine the mechanism and clean/lubricate it to (hopefully) eliminate the problem, but I can't get the front housing off. Removed all the screws, can't see any clips or anything, but it won't budge, even when prying against the motor. Tapped it with hammer in case there was corrosion holding it, but no difference. Anyone have any ideas?
