Been having damp problems internally due to a solidly capped disused chimney(unlined) in an old cottage. This shows as damp sand coming down .The internal wall is framed plasterboard with a gap between it and the stone external wall.I now realise a vented cap is necessary and will brickup the old fireplace opening with a vent but don't know whether to extend the opening to the room or leave it just as an air brick in the brickwork .Warm air from the room may condense in the chimney I think, but humid air coming down from the new cap in windy conditions might cause new condensation problems behind the plasterboard.Any suggestions much appreciated!!!
