Leave the tape measure and anything else you've tried in the tool box and for sure the leveling devices for sale in the store.
On a flat surface, level isn't necessary, but a gauge you built as a DIY'er using a couple pieces of lumber and a strip from your Styrofoam drink cup will tell you everything you need to know without attempting to recall any numbers. If you only have 1 indicating mark after checking left and right, L and R is perfect. Also check front to rear blade tip cutting edge height if desired.
