House is 1971 with 1/2' plywood subfloors over 2x8 joists 16' OC. 8'x10' Bathroom is ripped out and I'm debating on ripping out all the 1/2" plywood subfloor and replacing with 3/4" tongue and groove to support ceramic/porcelain tile. It seems a few years back it was recommended just to add another 1/2" layer over the existing 1/2" layer before tile. Now it seems everybody recommends to cut out and replace with 3/4". I am DIY but have done several kitchens and bathrooms. In the past, I have just added the additional 1/2" layer and never experienced any problems. However, I do like the idea of going with 3/4 T&G to keep transitions level.

Does blocking have to be added underneath where the new 3/4' meets the wall plates? It seems there would be deflection along these unsupported areas.

Recommendations?
