My house was built in 1959, and some of the doorknobs are wearing out inernally, so they aren't pulling in the latch far enough to allow the door to open. They don't look like modern doorknobs as far as the latch goes. I do remember having to do an extensive search to figure out how to remove the old knobs. But I finally found out the trick. They are the type where you need to press a flat screwdriver into a slot, to remove the knob first. To reveal the hidden screws behind the rosette.
That is not my issue, it's the latch that is different. As you will see in the photos. I would have no problem chiseling out the edge of the door, to install the new type of latch, with the rectangular plate. That again is not the issue.
But when trying to install a modern doorknob, the modern style of latch just would not fit, line up correctly, or the depth was different. I can't remember the exact issue, but it seemed impossible to replace it with a modern one.
It's been a while since I tried. So I wound up removing a doorknob from a closet door, just to fix another door, in the meantime. Perhaps the pictures I have attached will help? Thanks in advance!
