What is a gravatar?

When I tried to pick an avatar to put as my picture on this website it said something about a gravatar I can use, but it wanted an email address and not a picture link?

Can some kind soul please explain what this is please?

Hi bodgerb and welcome to the forums!

A "gravatar" is a globally recognised avatar, so you're able to keep the same avatar across many sites by using the same e-mail address. You need to manage your gravatar on this site if you want to use one:

http://en.gravatar.com/

It's a quick and easy way to keep a uniform avatar on lots of sites that support it, but it's by no means necessary (I don't use it either).
