Is spray foam insulation on the under side of the attic sheathing a common practice in the UK for single dwelling residential living quarters?

OK short answer is yes, this system was in use in England, indeed may still be being used

Was sold as a remedy for.
1/ Lack of insulation in the loft
2/. Prevented the tiles [that were exposed in the loft,] no felt or timber or ply used, from rattling in the wind.
3/. Stopped draughts in the loft space, yes seriously this was a sales pitch.

A short while after the spray was applied the timbers started to rot, because there was no ventilation getting to the timber coated in spray, any ingressing rain water ran across the top of the insulation + with no ventilation of the timber rot is inevitable

Disastrous system, should be banned.

What happens with you?

A acquaintance, who is in the HVAC business in TX, text me about a service call he went to in a 1924 residential wood framed house. The heating /cooling unit was in the attic, which is typical there. The problem was the water on any cooled member of the unit was dripping wet with condensation water, including wet expensive circuit boards. He said the attic felt as if he had entered the best and most expensive Sauna ever built. He declined the job. Smart move on his part there because of the way TX liability laws are written.

People don't understand Dewpoint temperatures. The attic ambient temperature was nearly 100°F and if the Dewpoint temperature was anything above 55-60 degrees F there will be condensation on any item that's colder than that and there in lies the problem. He didn't dewell there long enough to determine attic ventilation but I suspect there would never be that much natural flow to compensate for those conditions. If that foam is used in that manner it is suggested that space be conditioned as if it were being lived in and that may not be the total answer.
