Shade Structure

Hi. I'm hoping to get some opinions on something. I'm in SC; the afternoon sun hits the side of my house where there's no shade. When you walk down the sidewalk in the evening, you can feel the heat coming off the brick. My office is so hot during the day--even with a ceiling fan. I'm considering building building a pergola to shade that side--do you think it'll help?

I don't know where SC is, but I wish I had your weather here. I don't suppose a pergola would do much to help, but it would still be very nice if you could have plants growing over it.
