re varnishing baby cot

Hey I'm new on here,! I've just bought a second hand cot with scratches etc and I'm guessing I need to rub it down and re varnish it? Anyone advise me what i need ? and step by step instructions will be so helpful.Totally new to this DIY! Thanks,
