How to finish new wood

I am taking a stab and building a farmers table. Also called a threshers table.
I will be buying new lumber for my project.
The finishing details are what are confusing for me.
I expect to use this table outdoors so since we live in Ontario, it will get wet from rain even though it will be placed under an above deck.

so once its all built and sanded. what is my next step. I would like it to look old.
should I apply a stain? and if so, what type of stain.
After the stain do I apply Wax? I ordered some Briwax clear paste wax from the UK.

If I was doing an indoor table or any other piece of furnishing, would I sand, stain and wax?
Or does there need to be a sealer on it first and then wax? This has always baffled me. I want it to have the feel of wood, not plastic.

Any information anyone could provide to help me through the confusion of furniture finishing I would be truly grateful. My husband thinks this might be too large of a project for me to do on mt own but I am very determined Lady.

Thanks in advance,
Cheryl in Ontario
