How to choose an accent wall

So I'm thinking about painting an accent wall in my den area. The thing is, I don't know what color to do it in. I want it to be something very clean and of high quality. My decorations are mostly tans and maroon, with wooden accents. I'm leaning towards a deep tan color, but I cannot decide if that will look good. Anyone have suggestions on color and technique to appl th paint?
