Husband sanded oak hardwood flooring and applied Minwax Sedona Red Stain. It dried and we were left with shiny streak areas and looked like scuff marks surrounding it. He tried sanding and restaining again. 2nd time, was also a no go, it didn't work, now he has sanded for the 3rd time and we are waiting for it to dry to see if the spots remain? Thankfully we still haven't used a top polyurethane finish on it. Does anyone know what will help, or do we need to call a pro to get rid of those spots if they don't quit shining? Very obvious when you look at the floor.

Spray a little bit of WD-40 on a paper towel and try to rub the stains gently; then wipe the area and dry it very thoroughly. Should help, unless the underlying problem is more serious.

Thank you, no need to apply anything, the sedona red stain turned out too red to match the adjoining hall, so my husband is re sanding and re staining, hopefully he will find another stain with more brown and just a little red tone in it? Hopefully with the re sanding, it will remove all those shiny streaks. Should we be conditioning the floor prior to staining? Unfortunately, we can not find professional help in the stores where we have been buying the products. They read off the can, just as we do, but they aren't very knowledgeable??? I have read on line about conditioning the floor, but no one has told us that we need to do this first?. Any advice or reviews good or bad would be appreciated?

As of now, I think, there's no reason for panicking. Do what you're doing, and let me know if something's wrong.

Just finished resanding the other day. Now we have to match up the color with the hall so the tone looks like it's flowing through out. Too bad the store can't give us a sample board with all of the colors stained on oak? Think we will take our time on this one, who wants to sand again? We have the paper chart which doesn't help much at all. Minwax does not appear to have the same color?

It did not go well at all. All that work to cause more problems? Husband re-stained and the new color blended in well, that was okay but all these chatter machine/marks that mostly weren't visible before appeared after he put on the water based oil modified polyurethane finish? Don't know how much sanding the floor can take, so do not know where to go from here outside of leaving it be? He sanded lightly between the first and 2nd coat of top coat. but would a hand sander fix this problem if he were to only do the marks or will it create new marks? Husband worked so hard, that it would be nice if he could find a simple solution to fix it? If not, wonder how much a pro will cost to fix up this problem. He originally quoted us a $1000 plus taxes to sand and finish that room. So much for saving money.

Drum sanders are good for rough work. discs better for the next level and detail sanders work you hard but are necessary sometimes. There is a machine with 4 disks that one could rent that does a good job even in corners if your baseboard is up. There is also one with one big flat square of sandpaper. These are orbitals not drums if that helps.
