Hi,

Am hanging drywall for the first time using tapered edge boards, am only planning to tape and fill once hung (not skimming on top).

Question I have is whether you join two tapered edges on outside corners so that when you add the metal corner beading you can fill to get a flush corner

or do you use two butt joints with metal edging and just fill it and sand down until you reach a reasonably flush finish?

I know you can use corner tape, but this doesn't seem like itll add much protection to the corner against knocks etc?

any advice and reasoning would be appreciated.

cheers,

you only require one tapered edge to fill with jointing compound in a corner, just tape the corner with a minimal overlap to not exceed the line of the filler.

No need for a tapered edge on outside corners. It's best to "save" the tapered ends for mid-wall butt joints. Metal corner bead is a must. Drag out your mud about 8-12" for a smooth transition from the wall to the slightly raised corner bead (appears flush, negligible difference, won't be seen).
