Hello! I am building a monster BBQ/smoker and the interior I want made out of metal. What drill and drill bits should I have to drill holes of bolts? Preferably handheld. I am thinking not welding, but using bolts and those "L" shaped holders, who's name currently escapes me. After the frame is complete, I was thinking about going in with a ceramic clay and covering the inside with it, which will seal the cracks from heat escaping, as well as help with heat retention.

Any advise would be very helpful

Get a drill bit sharpener called "Drill Doctor" and some tapping fluid\oil. I would suggest the hardest bits you can buy with a light pressure and continuous oil. Or water even if you can make a small tube supply work. There are impact drills and carbide bits and so forth depending on what you want to work with.

Hello,

I know this is an older thread, but I am currently building/converting a grill/smoker into a bigger just-smoker. I have been having great luck using small gauge steel (28ga i think. I will have to double check) and building a simple bending rig to fold all the edges to give it some real strength. And then drilling holes and either using a rivet, which is super easy and very strong, or a small pan head/machine screw.

You can also get high temp caulking made for grills and the like. I can provide a link if you would like.

here are a couple of pictures of my grill in progress:
