Hi. One of the door knobs fell off of a mortise lock on a bathroom door. The lock is very old (I don't know how old.) The threads on the door knob no longer hold. I bought new door knobs at Lowes and they seem to fit but the it takes a lot of effort to turn the knobs. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Sounds like the screws to fit the handles are positioned incorrectly. Remove the screws temporarily and attempt to turn the handle. If it turns with ease then the screws need to be repositioned more accurately. Hope this helps.
