Damp proof membrane removal

I have removed the skirting boards on an internal wall, ready to redecorate and replace. Behind it is the DPM, coming up the wall a few cms. Am I ok to trim this back level with the floor, so that I can glue the new skirting to the wall rather than the membrane (which is obviously loose).
