Hi, I’m not sure if this is an appropriate place to ask the question, but it’s worth a try. We live in a four bedroom/3 reception/2 bathroom bungalow, built in 1970. Mains gas central heating was installed in 1970, there has been a new boiler since then, but it has very small bore pipes and the whole system is incredibly sluggish. Basically, we’ve been told we need a complete new system. We’ve had a quote for a Worcester Bosch 40 kW boiler, 14 radiators and complete new pipework. That came in at £18,000, a lot more than we were expecting. We understand it is a big job, all the pipework has to be in the attic with surface mounted copper pipes coming down the walls. We have struggled to find anyone else locally to give us a quote, so although this is a reputable company, I’m really worried that it’s not a reasonable price. It certainly a lot of money for a pensioner couple to find. Are there any central heating engineers out there who could let me know if this price is in the region they would expect, or are we being taken for a ride. Many thanks.

Hi and welcome.

It's usual to get more than one quote for a job this large.
I think the price you've been quoted is a joke.

Even with small bore pipes, it shouldn't be sluggish if it's a single storey building.

it is going up, up, up. up to $30k for a medium size home fully replaced (meaning without upgrades of any kind just full replacement not including ducts).

Hi, just wanted to say a big thank you for your message. We managed to get a couple more quotes, it’s quite difficult in the rural area. In the end, we found someone who has just completed the job, for central heating, plus replacing all the hot water pipes as well, for just over 9K. It was sluggish because it had 50 years worth of rubbish in the pipes and radiators, some of which were full of rust and rubbish. Your message gave me the confidence to keep trying for a better quote.

The cost of a complete central heating system can vary widely based on several factors, including the size of your home, the type of system you choose, the complexity of the installation, and the region you're located in. On average, the cost can range from £2,500 to £5,500 or more. However, it's essential to break down the components that contribute to the overall cost:

  1. Boiler Cost: The boiler itself is a significant portion of the expense. The type of boiler you opt for – whether it's a combi boiler, conventional boiler, or system boiler – will impact the cost. Prices can range from £600 to £2,500 or higher, depending on the brand, efficiency, and capacity.
  2. Installation Costs: The installation process involves labor, piping, and potentially additional work like upgrading radiators or installing underfloor heating. Installation costs typically range from £1,000 to £3,000, but they can increase if extensive modifications are required.
  3. Radiators: If you're replacing or upgrading radiators, their cost will contribute to the overall price. Radiator costs vary based on size, material, and style, and can range from £50 to £300 or more per radiator.
  4. Controls and Thermostats: Including smart thermostats or zone controls can enhance energy efficiency and comfort. These additions can cost around £100 to £300, depending on the complexity of the system.
  5. Piping and Fittings: The piping required for your central heating system, along with fittings and accessories, will contribute to the cost. This can range from a few hundred to over a thousand pounds, depending on the layout of your home.
  6. Flue Installation: For certain boiler types, you may need a flue installation. The cost depends on factors such as the type of flue and its positioning, ranging from £100 to £300 or more.
  7. Labour and Miscellaneous Costs: Labour charges for the installation, as well as any unforeseen additional work that might arise during installation, can contribute to the overall expense.
  8. Location: Costs can also vary by region, with higher living costs generally reflecting higher installation costs.
To get an accurate estimate for your specific situation, it's advisable to obtain quotes from reputable heating professionals. They can assess your home's requirements and provide a tailored quote based on the size, layout, and your heating preferences. Keep in mind that investing in a quality central heating system and professional installation can lead to long-term energy savings and enhanced home comfort.
