We are trying to figure out:
1. What the ceiling is made of
2. The best repair method (can we scrape and fill with mud, seal and then paint or should we be cutting the whole thing out?)
We bought a 1954 cape in MA with water damage in the ceiling of our living room. the Source was repaired years before we bought it and it hasn’t been wet for at least 3 years (most likely more). The ceilings in other parts of the house have calcimine, but this one looks newer. The whole space is about 12x24 inches and is close to a corner but the particularly large crack is only about 5 inches long though the pics make it looks huge).

Extra: we have two toddlers and our house is small so we are also trying to cause the least amount of disruption to our already limited space, and trying to make decisions that will be safest to their health.
