Hello! We just bought a house and removed the wood fireplace cover that they had over the brick fireplace. We are going to clean up the firplace and paint it but we do not know how to repair the sides of the fireplace first. This is our first house and we are not very handy... yet.

There was wood paneling underneath the fireplace cover and the brown stuff on the side of the fireplace in the one picture is glue from that.

Any ideas on how to repair this? Do we just scrap the glue off and grout?

It may break off if you try to separate adhesive being strong. But remmebr heat softens this adhesive. Now to remove the glue from the wood, take a swab of cotton and moisten using acetone and be careful to apply it only on the region of glue, leave it for a minute.

Good to know regarding heating vs. Scraping. Someone recommended putting trim around the fireplace just to cover it. Not sure how that will look though.
