Hi, I'm currently revamping my shower area. It is an alcove shower so 3 solid walls and 1 door entry. I am currently deciding on which shower tray to purchase and which door. The trays I am considering have tiling upstands which are supposed to help prevent leaks. I understand their function but I'm confused when there are 3 upstand and 4 upstand versions available. I can understand why you'd have a 3 upstand version such that a shower door frame would sit directly on top of the shower tray and I guess would rely on silicone sealant for the waterproof seal. I assume that on a 4 upstand version that the upstands are symetrical ie. the same spacing around the 4 top edges. If a tile overlaps the upstand then it only protrudes a few mm into the shower tray but if you were fitting a shower door frame up to an upstand , because the frame could be few cms wide then I guess it could protrude into the shower tray and look a mess. So my questions are:-
1. For an alcove shower would you always choose a 3 upstand tray?
2. Are shower doors/frames designed to work with or without upstands?

The door I am considering would be a bifold door that opens into the shower.
