In 2009, we had no power for nine days due to an ice storm. Surviving on a generator, one of the few pleasures we had was a nice hot shower.

Then last year, I looked at our gas hot water heater and realized that it was from 1987. Yes, you read that right. I started thinking about the tank bursting, flooding....couldn't sleep till I replaced the poor old thing, even though it was still chugging along.

Someone said something today that knocked me flat. With today's piezoelectric ignitions to light the pilot light, will our gas hot water heater now be out of commission when the power goes out?

I have a Kenmore Power Miser 9.

And now I want my old, decrepit GE water heater back.:(
