so called "air curtains"

These are those high velocity air streams that blow
across open doorways such as in a mall or casino, so
that things look "open" with doors in the way.

Supposedly they block transfer of inside/outside air
and reduce the heating/cooling load compared to what
a simple opening would create.

I have my doubts.

Anyone have any pointers as to whether these really
do anything useful aside from wasting even more
heating/cooling/duel/money?

Thanks

Air curtains block flying insects from entering a building. The units
are required by the health department in my county to be installed over
the back doors of restaurants, grocery stores and commercial kitchens
and equipped with a door switch to switch them on whenever the door is
opened. I can only remember one grocery store that had one built in over
the front entrance that ran continuously. I don't see them around
anymore because women complained about their expensive hairdos being
blown away along with freaked out infants and the loose contents of
their shopping carts. ☺

From what I've seen at a resort, they have a double garage door wide
opening for a game room. I don't get blown away, and it's instant summer
relief entering. I see one misused at a local pizza shop. They got that
door thing going while consuming large amounts of air internally going up
the vents, plus window fans. It might help with insects but I doubt it.
