Looked in on eternal-september this am w/ no discernible problems. They
do have occasional slowdowns or apparently some uptime issues but rarely
more than a couple hours. Sundays do seem to be perhaps maintenance
I've noticed but didn't see any disruption yesterday when checked...

Works just fine from: Google >> groups >> rec.woodworking.

Can someone please explain why newsreaders are even necessary? What's
the point in having multiple servers? You buy a computer, get a phone
line with DSL, sign in for a Google account and you're off and
running. Even AOL is free now. Mystified...

Using google to access usenet is like using a bent screwdriver with a
chipped blade, a rusty wobbly dull circular saw with bad bearings and a
frayed power cord, a level with a broken bubble, and a collection of
bent nails and warped, knotty lumber to build fine cabinetry.

If you don't grok that, you don't know what you're missing. Windoze has
a built-in newsreader, I think, and an account with Eternal September or
other free provider takes 5 minutes to set up. Do it.

Google groups is a clumsy, confusing, disorganized interface. Like a
badly arranged library, store, or workplace. Few or zero options for
sorting, filtering, etc. I'm a mac guy and use MT-NewsWatcher. Tons of
options for me to set up things to my own liking, but also is logical
and understandable right out of the box. On occasion I'm forced to use
google briefly, and I can't make heads nor tails of it. It's an absolute
mess.

A newsreader is a program *designed* to read and write in usenet. You
have a word processing program on your computer, and a web browser, and
a program for viewing and editing photos, etc. You wouldn't want to try
to use your web browser when you need a spreadsheet, so why the hell
would you use if for a usenet interface? It's the wrong tool, period.

Another *very* good reason to avoid google groups is that many people,
including me, kill posts from google by default, in order to stop the
spam, 99.99% of which is posted from google groups. So, your posts are
not being seen, by a very significant percentage of usenet participants.
I only see them because you're among a handful of people who have stood
out enough to make my whitelist.

I think Joe was asking more for newsreader options as opposed to news
server options, but of course eternal september is good as a server.
Basic service is free and if you want porn you can pay a little more to
get the binary groups.

I'm not really up on what's available for newsreaders these days; I have
an aging mac and am happy with MT-Newswatcher but I've seen mixed
reviews of the later versions.

Download.com is a good place to check out what's available in the
freeware and shareware categories, with reviews, etc.

Aw, gee whiz, could I please, pretty please, make your whitelist? I
swear I never spammed in all my born days!

I used Agent for years as newsreader and a GREAT email client, but
eventually I think they started charging for Usenet; dunno if they
even still carry it. And anyway, their builds were leaping ahead
faster than I needed -- or even thought were more than the Next Big
Thing for those who can't live without the NBT. So I started posting
to the few groups I do visit on Usenet, via Google.

So far, the Kool Katz on AHR have been super helpful to moi! I try
to disregard the aggressive language used by a very few, as well as
the religious .sigs, and of course I ignore the Asian commercial
posts and porn. Speaking of which, has anybody heard about the
Octopus porn that is said to be big in Japan? Now, really...!
