Maytag Washer Leak

I returned to my summer home in Pennsylvania to a maytag washer that leaked when you ran it. I took the front cover off and can see the leak coming from a gasket between the tub and motor. It only leaks when tub is full and turning.

So I put the washer up on blocks and put a pan un der it to catch the leak. I ran it with the front cover off to watch the leak. Now - guess what - it will not leak a drop. I am thinking that putting it up on stable blocks instead of the padded carpet may have balanced it a bit. I still want to repair that gasket.

Is this a hard job? Should I just call a repair man? Is this major or minor?

I am currently using the washer with a pan under it - but right now nothing is leaking into the pan.

May be that the only real problem is the boot clamps have worked loose and moving the machine slightly cured it temporarily. I've not worked on Maytag, but would assume little fundamental difference to the GE designs. There are two clamps, one on the top and one on the bottom of the boot seal. The bottom was should be accessible from the outside, the top requires pulling the drum.

If it's quite an old machine or sat for long periods dry and/or inactive, probably would be just as well to replace it while you've got the drum out--again, if it's similar to the GE as I would presume, it's not a major problem.
