I have a 2,100 sq. ft. home with a bryant model 561CJ060-A HVAC split unit (17 years old). Compressor went out, is it recommended to replace entire unit, or just replace the compressor and continue using the R-22 freon. Not sure if this unit is even properly sized for my home. Live in Las Vegas, with extreme summer heat. Have solar screens on all windows. My Bryant unit has been extremely relaible, have been very satisfied with it's reliabilty over the years.
Any recommendations on size and manufacture is greatly appreciatted.

You have several options . Some of which are ;

A - New R410a system , inside & out . ( Most expensive . )

B - New R410a condenser & A-Coil ( and possibly new refrigeration lines ) .

C - New dry charged R22 condenser .

D - New R22 compressor installed into the old condenser with appropriate precautions ( if the failure of the original compressor was a burn out . Add appropriate amount of R22 . ) ( Maybe the least expensive . )

God bless
