I'm planning to replace the anode rod on my water heater. The unit is about 6 years old. I've read you can draw off some water & check for rust (to see if you're too late). I've done that and the water was clear. I don't intend to check the anode. Once I pull it, I'll replace it regardless. At $30 for the anode as opposed to a new heater $800-900 I'm not going to fool around.
My question is, I have the high efficiency type with a electric fan exhaust. I must remove the top fan unit in order to get at the anode. I know you need to shut off power & water. Then drain off a little water. I'll also use Teflon tape on the anode threads. Any precautions, steps, especially on restart? Also I have an impact wrench. Can I assume using the impact wrench to remove the anode, allows this to become a one man job?
